The Legendary Anime Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release two seasons every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year break that began in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and allow the manga to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to supply viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or additional to make up for time.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
